Summary
Warsaw’s Poniatowski Viaduct stands as the world's first elevated urban expressway, embodying the visionary ideals of early 20th-century urban planning movements like Städtebau and City Beautiful. This monumental structure, designed by architect Stefan Szyller, overcame Warsaw's unique topography to connect a bridgehead with the upper town using an unprecedented scale of reinforced concrete and steel arches. Beyond its engineering innovation, the viaduct symbolized Poland’s cultural reassertion during Russian occupation, blending functional necessity with Renaissance-inspired architectural grandeur.
