Summary
Gulangyu Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and historic international settlement, faces challenges in its street space due to increased tourism and leisure activities. This study proposes innovative rest installations that integrate historical design elements from the island's old buildings, enhancing both resident comfort and cultural preservation. Field investigations across three central streets—Huandao Road, Longtou Road, and Fuzhou Road—revealed key issues in street space functionality. The research introduces a design strategy that responds to Gulangyu’s unique terrain while preserving its historical memory, offering a model for optimizing other Chinese historical and cultural blocks. This approach bridges traditional aesthetics with modern leisure needs, providing actionable insights for urban planners and heritage conservationists.
