Summary
The Temple of Olympian Zeus (Olympeion) in Agrigento, Sicily, stands as the largest Doric temple ever built, though it was never completed and now exists only in ruins. Historical accounts by Polybius and Diodorus highlight its grandeur, noting that its unfinished state was due to the Carthaginian conquest of 405 BC. The temple, once a monumental structure in the Valle dei Templi, was later toppled by earthquakes and systematically dismantled in the 18th century for construction materials, leaving behind only scattered stone fragments and columns. Today, it serves as a testament to ancient architectural ambition and the resilience of historical sites against natural disasters and human exploitation.
