Summary
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted tourism and local economies in the Historic Centre of São Luís, Brazil, exposing vulnerabilities in its economic structure. Small businesses and street vendors, reliant on tourist flows for income, faced severe declines due to lockdowns and reduced visitation, highlighting their dependence on cultural circuits (e.g., museums, theaters) and fixed social networks. Fieldwork conducted in July 2020 revealed widespread unemployment and economic hardship among marginalized populations, underscoring the fragility of informal economies tied to heritage tourism. The study suggests that sustainable urban planning must address these systemic inequalities to mitigate future crises.
