Summary
A comparative analysis of the relationships between urban areas and natural landmarks reveals that Norway's integrated system of cities, villages, and fjords—such as Bergen, Geiranger village, and Geirangerfjord—can serve as a model to enhance Irkutsk's appeal for tourism and urban development. Unlike many UNESCO World Heritage Sites where natural features are isolated from human settlement, the southern coast of Lake Baikal, also a UNESCO site, offers a unique opportunity for sustainable urban integration. This study highlights how Norway's successful balance between urbanization and preservation of natural beauty can inform strategies for Irkutsk, potentially increasing its attractiveness to both residents and tourists.
