Summary
Nizari Ismailis established strategic fortresses, including Alamut and those in Kuhistan, to disseminate their teachings and expand their influence. These fortresses, such as Muninabad, Kain, Tun, and Bircend, served as administrative, military, and cultural hubs under local governors known as 'muhteşems.' The study reveals that these muhteşems played pivotal roles in ensuring the security of the fortresses, resolving regional political issues, promoting Ismailite beliefs through socio-cultural activities, and controlling trade networks. By analyzing the functions of Kuhistan's fortresses and the activities of notable muhteşems like Muzaffareddin (1202-1221/22) and Shihabeddin Mansur-i Abu'l-feth (1222-1224), the research provides a comprehensive understanding of their political, military, cultural, and doctrinal contributions. The study also examines their responses to changing authorities, military defenses, and loyalty to the imamate.
