Summary

Researchers have identified Didymocarpus pingyuanensis, a new species of flowering plant endemic to the Danxia landscape in Pingyuan County, Guangdong Province, China. This discovery was supported by phylogenetic analysis using nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences and morphological evidence. The study also proposes two new combinations, elevating D. yinzhengii and D. gamosepalus from varieties to species status within the Didymocarpus genus. The new species is distinguished by its deeply 5-lobed calyx, which reaches about three quarters of its length, a trait not seen in other members of Didymocarpus sect. Heteroboea.
