Summary
Researchers have uncovered significant microbial biodiversity and biotechnological potential within the Bochnia Salt Mine. The study revealed a notably high relative abundance of Chlamydiae (3.5%) at the mine's first level compared to other levels (< 0.1%), along with an impressive 21.6% presence of Patescibacteria in one sample. Shotgun sequencing identified 16 unique metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), including one linked to Halobacterium bonnevillei, suggesting the presence of potentially undescribed species. Preliminary analyses also detected hundreds of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) and dozens of antimicrobial peptide (AMP) coding genes, hinting at promising applications in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. This study provides a foundational insight into the microbial diversity and potential of Polish salt mines, positioning them as valuable sites for further exploration.
