Summary
A 2023 study of Kizhi Island's waters in Lake Onego revealed significant water pollution, particularly in the western part of the site. The research identified elevated levels of easily mineralizable organic matter (OM), phenolic compounds, and oil products through bacterioplankton analysis. Bacilliform bacteria dominated the morphological structure, indicating high OM content, while phenol-oxidizing and hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacteria confirmed specific pollutants. Total coliform bacteria counts exceeded recreational water standards almost universally, with the western area showing the highest pollution due to active shipping and limited water exchange. This study highlights the need for targeted environmental monitoring in UNESCO-listed areas with human activity.
