Summary

Iranian caravanserais, particularly those along central Iran's roads, exhibit architectural consistency shaped by historical construction traditions and design systems. A comparative analysis of 65 suburban caravanserais across Isfahan, Qom, Markazi, and Tehran provinces reveals that their key elements—such as entrances, courtyards, porticos, and stables—followed standardized frameworks established by skilled architects and coordinated institutions. While some features remained stable, others evolved due to changing functional needs or architectural techniques. This study highlights the influence of both physical (environmental) and metaphysical (cultural/social) factors on their design, providing critical insights for the conservation and restoration of these heritage structures.
