Summary

This study identifies key differences and similarities between the National Park Service (NPS) and UNESCO criteria for designating cultural landscapes, with a focus on five U.S. national parks, including Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It evaluates how these parks meet the characteristics of cultural landscapes under both frameworks, analyzing their preservation strategies, visitation patterns, and infrastructure. The research highlights that while some U.S. parks are currently listed as natural sites, they have potential to be re-designated as cultural landscapes due to their significant human-natural interactions. Recommendations are provided for enhancing protection through UNESCO World Heritage Listing, emphasizing the benefits of global recognition for long-term preservation efforts.
