Summary
A significant decline in suitable habitats for the endangered West Siberian White Crane (Leucogeranus leucogeranus) has been observed in Keoladeo National Park, India, due to climate change and reduced water inflow. The study reveals a warming trend with increased aridity, despite stable precipitation levels, leading to lower water levels in wetlands. This decline is attributed to higher evaporation rates and decreased water supply from the Ajahn Bund reservoir, primarily driven by agricultural water consumption. Researchers analyzed meteorological data (1958–2021), remote sensing data (1972–2022), and reservoir inflow volumes (1980–2010) to quantify these changes. The findings underscore the vulnerability of this critical crane wintering ground to climate-driven ecosystem shifts.
