Summary

A fortified landscape emerged in Thugga (modern Tunisia) during the 6th and 7th centuries, marked by strategic fortifications that reshaped late antique settlement systems. This study reveals how forts, city walls, and watchtowers adapted to evolving security needs, while also uncovering decision-making processes behind their construction through analysis of spolia—a first for Byzantine North African archaeology. The research applies landscape archaeology to trace material resource use and fortification strategies, offering a model for future studies in the Maghreb.
