Summary

A three-year study (2005–2008) identified 28 species of winter migratory birds in rural ponds across Yamuna Nagar district, Haryana, India. These birds, including the Bar-headed Goose and Red-crested Pochard, face significant threats from human disturbance and habitat degradation due to villagers' reliance on these ponds. The research highlights the urgent need for conservation intervention, as unchecked interference risks local extinction of migratory species, mirroring the fate of the Siberian Crane in Keoladeo National Park. The study underscores the vulnerability of these populations and calls for immediate action from Indian authorities to protect critical wintering grounds.
