World Heritage Site: Lines and Geoglyphs of Nasca and Palpa
Publication Year: 2010
Publication Type: Conference paper
Publication Identifier: WHEC5C975D6DD
Summary
Google Earth has revolutionized the study of ancient civilizations by revealing previously unknown structures and patterns, significantly reducing time and resource costs. The tool's high-resolution imagery has uncovered hidden geoglyphs in Nasca, a potential second Monte Alban near Oaxaca, Mexico, and prehistoric causeways in Mesoamerica and New Mexico. Additionally, it provides insights into the orientation of Chinese pyramids, suggesting the use of a magnetic compass. This study demonstrates how satellite imaging can enhance visualization, dissemination of scientific data, and facilitate new discoveries without the need for extensive field measurements.
