Summary
New dating of Pliocene-Pleistocene sedimentary units in the western Tarim Basin reveals that deformation in the Pamir and Tian Shan orogens began between 5 and 1 million years ago, with eastward propagation rates reaching up to 115 km/m.y. and basinward growth rates up to 12 km/m.y. The study combined Al-26/Be-10 burial dating with magnetostratigraphy to constrain the timing of fold initiation and fault activity in this actively deforming region, addressing challenges posed by coarse-grained sediments that are difficult to date using traditional methods.
