Summary

Four new rootstock genotypes derived from backcross breeding programs demonstrate superior qualitative performance compared to commercial rootstocks, including enhanced accumulation of soluble sugars and modulation of cultivar vigor. These findings were observed across multiple vineyards in prestigious Italian wine regions, including Castel del Monte (A.O.C.), where the rootstocks were grafted onto Cabernet Sauvignon and local cultivars. The study, conducted from 2007 to 2009, evaluated agronomic parameters such as Ravaz index, bud fertility, and production weight per plant, alongside qualitative metrics like pH, titratable acidity, polyphenols, and anthocyanins in berry skins. Microvinification and sensory evaluations further confirmed the improved performance of the new genotypes, suggesting their potential for both productivity and wine quality.
