Summary
A water sanitation project in Praia do Sono, Brazil—a gateway community linking two protected areas—has significantly enhanced residents' sense of belonging and identity while addressing Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) for safe sanitation. The study, using qualitative methods including participant observation and stakeholder interviews, revealed that territorial conflicts, conservation policies, and mass tourism have constrained traditional practices and collective cohesion. However, the project demonstrated tangible health benefits and improved quality of life, offering a model for integrating sustainable sanitation in tourist-driven regions while balancing ecological preservation with community development.
