Diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) of Iguaçu National Park, Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil

A comprehensive inventory of diatom species (Bacillariophyceae) in Iguaçu National Park, Brazil, revealed 120 taxa, including 36 new records for the region. This study significantly expands the known diversity of freshwater diatoms in this UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting the ecological richness of its aquatic ecosystems. Researchers employed a combination of light and scanning electron microscopy to analyze samples collected from various water bodies within the park. The findings underscore the importance of Iguaçu National Park as a biodiversity hotspot and provide crucial baseline data for future conservation efforts.
