Summary
Research indicates that the Camino Francés, one of the most heavily trafficked routes of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage, is experiencing significant overcrowding. This study, based on a quantitative analysis of 385 responses from pilgrims, reveals that current tourist levels are altering the route's identity and could pose long-term challenges. The investigation focuses on perceptual carrying capacity, assessing how increased visitation impacts the pilgrimage experience. Findings suggest that while the Camino Francés remains a vital cultural and spiritual pathway, its sustainability is at risk due to rising demand, necessitating further attention to preserve its unique characteristics.
