Summary
The extension of Berlin's U-Bahn line U5, initiated in March 2012, aims to bridge a critical gap in the city's public transportation network by connecting key destinations around Museumsinsel, Unter den Linden, and the government quarter with the central railway station. This project presents significant geological challenges due to the glacial subsoil conditions typical of Berlin's Urstromtal, characterized by poorly graded sands, zones of marly till, stones, and a high groundwater level. These conditions necessitate advanced planning and execution for construction pits and tunnel excavation, further complicated by the need to navigate around historical structures, including those on Museumsinsel and the Spree river, as well as ongoing projects like the Humboldtforum. The study highlights the intricate balance required between urban development, historical preservation, and engineering innovation in densely built environments.
