Summary
A rare and previously understudied Greek Gospel manuscript from the 12th century, part of the Byzantine artistic tradition, has been identified within the collection of the Trinity Sergius Lavra in Sergiev Posad. This illuminated codex, housed in the Russian State Library, features four miniature portraits of the Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) alongside decorative initials and illustrations. Unlike other works from this period, it lacks comprehensive artistic analysis, with existing descriptions primarily dating its creation to the 12th century. The manuscript's script belongs to the Chicago-Karahissar group, a significant but under-explored category of Byzantine manuscripts. This discovery highlights the Lavra's historical and cultural significance while contributing to broader research on Byzantine paleography and illumination.
