Summary
Arctic soils near hydrocarbon storage on Bol'shoy Solovetskiy island exhibit significant phytotoxicity, as demonstrated by inhibited germination and growth of cress (Lepidium sativum L.), alongside a stimulating effect consistent with homeresis phenomena. Analysis of six soil samples—five contaminated and one control—revealed that respiratory activity in all samples did not exceed 52.5% of the control, underscoring the broader impact of technogenic pollution on soil health. The study recommends an integrated biotesting system as a preliminary screening tool for soils exposed to highly toxic contaminants, combining phytotoxicity assays with respiratory activity measurements.
