Summary
Researchers have identified distinct sedimentological phases within linear dunes of the Namib Sand Sea using high-resolution ground-penetrating radar (GPR). The study reveals an upward transition from an active superimposed dune migration phase to a planar laminated draping phase, separated by a notable erosional surface. This finding highlights changes in current directions and bedform accumulation patterns, as well as non-depositional and erosional events, which are critical for understanding the dynamic processes shaping these dunes. The study also integrates GPR data from a Pleistocene sub-aerial shoreline deposit in Utah (USA), demonstrating the applicability of this method across different depositional settings. Horizon-flattening techniques were used to accentuate changes in depositional regimes, offering insights that would otherwise be below the resolution of seismic methods.
