Summary
A comparative analysis of lacquer coatings from archaeological objects dating to the Xiongnu and Turkic periods in the cemeteries of Transbaikalia and Tuva reveals the consistent use of urushi lacquer, a high-status material across different cultures. The study identified this through pyrolytic gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (THM-PY-GC/MS), which detected organic components in the lacquer layers of objects like chariots and saddles from distinct historical epochs. Additionally, examination using polarizing light microscopy (PLM) and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) elucidated technological variations in crafting these items. This research highlights the enduring prestige of lacquered artifacts while providing insights into evolving lacquer application techniques over time.
