Summary
Recent advancements in GIS and remote sensing (RS) have significantly enhanced the identification, monitoring, and management of archaeological and cultural heritage along the Silk Roads. This study highlights how these technologies, integrated under the Digital Belt and Road Heritage (DBAR-Heritage) mission, provide sophisticated tools for exploring and preserving heritage sites. Five case studies demonstrate their application in identifying linear sites, assessing risks to heritage like Angkor Wat, and reconstructing Silk Road routes using multi-source geospatial data. While these methods offer substantial benefits, challenges remain, particularly in balancing data integration with interdisciplinary approaches. The findings underscore the potential of GIS-RS in the era of Big Earth Data, paving the way for broader adoption in cultural heritage conservation.
