Summary
A groundbreaking analysis of the 1502 fresco on the southern facade of Ferapontov Monastery's Nativity Cathedral reveals its rhythmic harmony with the building's architecture, a previously unrecognized feature. The study proposes that the depiction of the enthroned Virgin Mary surrounded by archangels and saints—commonly found in altar conches—was intentionally placed over the burial site of former abbot St. Martinian to symbolize an altar space long before his canonization or the construction of a real tomb. This challenges conventional interpretations of the fresco's purpose, suggesting it served as both a commemorative and symbolic element, blending funerary and liturgical significance.
