Summary

Ghadames exhibits a unique urban structure characterized by houses stacked atop one another with subterranean tunnel access, making it highly defensible. This study highlights the town's resilience and strategic architecture, which has remained largely unchanged since the 19th century. The research draws on historical correspondence, including letters from Major Alexander Gordon Laing, to explore Ghadames' significance during his trans-Saharan journey. It also sheds light on the town's past rebellions and economic burdens, such as the crippling fines imposed in 1810. The study provides insights into the town's enduring design and its role in historical trade routes.
