Summary
Over the past three decades, tourism has become a dominant economic and functional force in Évora's historic center, reinforcing its role as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The study reveals that between 1985 (pre-classification) and 2014, tourism-related urban functions—such as hospitality, cultural services, and retail—expanded significantly, reshaping the city’s economic landscape. Using demographic data and spatial analysis, researchers assessed how tourism distribution evolved, noting a peak in 2012 amid global economic constraints. The findings suggest that while tourism remains pivotal to Évora’s identity, its growth may face challenges without strategic planning. This work highlights the need for sustainable development to balance heritage preservation with economic vitality.
