Summary

A newly identified Armillaria species from Amami-Oshima, Japan, was found to be distinct from known Japanese taxa through phylogenetic analysis of elongation factor-1α (EF-1α) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences. This species clusters with A. novae-zelandiae from Southeast Asia, forming a strongly supported clade adjacent to another containing Australian and New Zealand variants. The study highlights the genetic divergence of Armillaria species in subtropical island ecosystems, providing insights into their evolutionary relationships.
