Summary

Enhancing walkability through active mobility measures can significantly improve the accessibility, attractiveness, and social inclusion of historic city centers. A study on the Historic Centre of Naples demonstrates that redeveloping pedestrian paths increases connectivity among houses, services, public facilities, and green spaces, thereby revitalizing built heritage and promoting sustainable urban development. The research identifies and classifies active mobility measures in a matrix, analyzing their impact on physical, economic, social, and functional aspects of historic districts. Applying this framework to the Pizzofalcone area—despite its marginalization—reveals potential for competitive spill-over effects, bridging gaps between historical value and urban functionality.
