Summary

Researchers have identified and described a new subspecies of white-footed dunnart (Sminthopsis leucopus) inhabiting the Wet Tropics of Queensland, Australia. This population, genetically distinct from its conspecifics in temperate regions like New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania, exhibits significant divergence with estimates ranging from 2.3–4.8%. The discovery was supported by genetic analysis of the mitochondrial Cytochrome b gene, morphological assessments, and habitat differences. Given its small distribution, low density, and tropical upland location, the subspecies is proposed for Endangered conservation status due to potential threats, particularly from climate change.
