Summary
Archaeological research in Kraków has uncovered a previously unknown defensive wall predating the establishment of Kazimierz under Magdeburg Law. This wall, built from layered broken limestone and running perpendicular to the known defensive structure, suggests an earlier settlement unit that was later transformed during urban planning in 1335. The discovery, made during road surface replacement work on Krakowska Street, provides indirect evidence about the wall's height (ca. 1.5 ell) and its alignment with an old trade route, the salt way. Stratigraphic analysis confirms the wall's construction predates Kazimierz's formal establishment, offering insights into the town's early development and urban planning strategies.
