Summary
The degradation of the biocultural landscape in Xochimilco, Mexico, threatens its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This study reveals that local residents and agricultural producers perceive environmental deterioration primarily due to vertical implementation of conservation projects, which often overlook their knowledge and technologies. The research, based on ethnographic methods, underscores the need for inclusive decision-making processes that integrate local insights to align conservation efforts with community perspectives. Without this approach, current policies risk exacerbating rather than mitigating environmental decline.
