Summary
A combination of retrofitting techniques can significantly improve the seismic performance of historic stone masonry structures, as demonstrated by the case study of Gjirokastra Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Albania. The study employed advanced digital surveying, non-destructive testing (NDT), and nonlinear structural analysis to assess the tower's material properties, dynamic behavior, and potential causes of damage. Findings revealed that while ground improvement solutions were necessary, additional retrofitting was required to meet code-specified performance levels. This research underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in designing effective, integrated interventions for vulnerable historic structures in high-seismicity regions.
