Summary
A new analysis of ceramic fragments along two segments of the Qhapaq Ñan (Inca Road System) in San Juan, Argentina, reveals significant variability in pottery types and distributions that shed light on Inca domination in the Cuyo region. The study, which classified hundreds of sherds and estimated corresponding vessel quantities, found distinct differences between the northern segment (connecting Tocota and Villa Nueva) and the southern segment (extending from Barreal to the Mendoza border). These patterns suggest nuanced roles for local Diaguita populations in the Inca annexation process. The research combines artifactual analysis with spatial distribution studies to offer fresh insights into the socio-political dynamics of the region during the Inca period.
