Summary
A groundbreaking analysis of architectural measurements at UNESCO World Heritage Sites—including Leptis Magna, Thibilis, and Cuicul—reveals a sophisticated integration of Punic-Egyptian and Roman units during the transition from the Mauretania Tingitana era to the imperial period. This study demonstrates that local and Roman measurement systems coexisted harmoniously in buildings across Volubilis, Lixus, Banasa, and Thamusida, challenging assumptions about standardized Roman construction practices. The discovery of pesa monetalis (a new monetary weight standard) further suggests that societal transformations were mirrored in architectural innovation, blending traditional techniques with emerging imperial norms.
