Summary

This study introduces 'Hezar-tu' as a conceptual tool to analyze spatial relations within historic urban fabrics, focusing on the medinas of Fez, Isfahan, and Tunis. It reveals how these ancient city cores preserve premodern traditions—cultural values, sociospatial practices, and symbolic meanings—that persist despite modern urban encroachment. The research employs De Certeau's dual framework of 'map' (objective spatial description) and 'tour' (subjective experiential narrative) to highlight the coexistence of historical continuity and contemporary transformation in Islamic urban landscapes.
