Summary
Very high-resolution (VHR) stereo satellite images can detect sub-metre level physical changes on Gordion tumuli, as demonstrated by this study. Using WorldView-3 and KOMPSAT-3 data, researchers generated point cloud datasets with vertical accuracies of 0.16 m and 0.53 m root mean square error (RMSE), respectively. Digital surface models (DSMs) derived from these images were also compared to reference DSMs from Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) images, yielding average RMSE values of 0.28 m for WorldView-3 and 0.57 m for KOMPSAT-3. These findings highlight the potential of VHR stereo satellite imagery for monitoring and analyzing physical changes on archaeological sites with high precision.
