Summary

Researchers have identified biselyngbyolide A, a novel cytotoxic macrolide derived from the marine cyanobacterium Lyngbya sp., collected on Tokunoshima Island, Japan. This compound exhibits strong apoptosis-inducing activity against HeLa S3 and HL60 cells, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic agent. The study employed 2D NMR techniques to elucidate the gross structure of biselyngbyolide A, while NOESY spectrum analysis and CD data were used to determine its stereostructure. This discovery contributes to the growing body of research on bioactive compounds from marine cyanobacteria, offering new insights into their cytotoxic properties.
