Summary
Urban identity in Porto is not solely defined by centrality but also emerges from marginal and non-dominant spaces, challenging traditional notions of core/periphery. This study reveals that while the local government associates Porto's historic center as a reference for urban identity, 'creative class' professionals perceive identity formation in the margins, particularly in the eastern Bonfim area. The research analyzed urban planning documents and conducted semi-direct interviews to explore how centrality/marginality is strategically mobilized in urban planning, reflecting broader global intercity competition dynamics.
