Summary
A re-evaluation of historical records challenges the long-standing assumption that the Spanish royal favorite, the count-duke, was the driving force behind the advantageous marriage of Anna Carafa to the duke of Medina de las Torres. Instead, this study reveals that the count-duke was initially reluctant to support this union, both as a candidate for Anna and as a potential recipient of the Neapolitan viceroyalty. The research, focusing on the strategic significance of Sabbioneta during the 17th century, examines how Philip IV's intervention in marital negotiations aimed to safeguard the interests of the Hispanic Monarchy, shedding new light on the political dynamics of the era.
