Sidewalk Detection and Pavement Characterisation in Historic Urban Environments from Point Clouds: Preliminary Results

World Heritage Site: Mantua and Sabbioneta

Publication Year: 2021

Publication Type: Article

Publication Identifier: WHEDB27902C80

Summary

A novel method for detecting and characterizing sidewalks in historic urban environments, such as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, achieves high precision (80% for sidewalk detection and over 90% for paving characterization). Unlike existing approaches tailored to modern, standardized settings, this method accounts for irregularities like varying materials, absent curbs, and uncertain elevation differences between roads and sidewalks. Tested in Sabbioneta, Italy, it demonstrates promise despite challenges in corner areas, offering a robust tool for urban heritage analysis.
