Summary
Stable isotope analysis of human remains from the Cueva de las Manos, Río Pinturas, reveals significant insights into the diet and mobility patterns of hunter-gatherer groups in the region. The study found that while most individuals exhibited consistent isotopic values indicative of a steppe environment, one individual (Individual 3) from Puesto El Rodeo displayed distinct isotopic signatures suggesting non-local origins, likely from western areas outside the basin. This finding challenges the assumption of localized dietary and mobility patterns among these early populations. The research utilized stable isotopes of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen in collagen and bioapatite to differentiate ecological and climatic variations along an east-west axis in Patagonia, providing a novel perspective on prehistoric human movement and adaptation.
