Summary

Designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site triggers measurable qualitative leaps in tourism development for German cultural cities, mirroring the growth dynamics observed in corporate sectors. This study applies Sternad and Mödritscher’s nine-growth-area model—originally developed for businesses—to urban destinations, identifying discernible shifts in infrastructure, visitor experience, and heritage management post-designation. Through qualitative interviews across four German World Heritage sites, including Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, the research reveals how the label catalyzes sustained improvements in preservation practices, accessibility, and cultural programming, ultimately elevating the destination’s global standing.
