Summary

A community-driven approach to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage (ICH) has been demonstrated through the Tocatì Programme for the Safeguarding of Traditional Games and Sports, initiated in Verona, Italy. This programme, which connects communities, institutions, researchers, artists, and policymakers, showcases how civil society can effectively implement the UNESCO ICH Convention by fostering a sense of identity and continuity among social actors. The study examines the Tocatì experience, identifying key factors, actors, and steps that contribute to heritage-making, highlighting its role in shaping political, social, and cultural contexts. This case illustrates the dynamic and conflictual nature of heritage preservation while emphasizing the importance of community participation in ICH safeguarding.
