Summary
A study integrating place attachment (PA) into the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) reveals that subjective norms (SNs)—perceptions of social pressure—are the critical factor influencing residents' attitudes and behavioural intentions to support tourism in traditional Chinese villages. The research, conducted among 406 residents of Hongcun, confirms that PA mediates the relationship between SNs and residents' behavioural intention (BI), extending the TPB's applicability by incorporating resident-specific constructs. This is one of the first studies to combine PA with the TPB in a developing country context, offering new insights into how social influences shape tourism development from a local perspective.
