The Alfonso X’s patronage of Gothic architecture

World Heritage Site: Burgos Cathedral

Summary

King Alfonso X's patronage of Gothic architecture, while prominent in cathedrals such as Toledo, Burgos, and León, did not significantly promote rayonnant style in his kingdom. Instead, his most distinctive contributions were to the converted mosque-cathedrals of Seville and Córdoba, including the Gothic palace in the Alcázar. The study reassesses Alfonso's relationships with religious orders and highlights his financial support for these projects, challenging traditional views on his architectural influence.
