Summary
Anthropogenic development in the Ugam River valley, Western Tien Shan, has significantly altered bird population structure and diversity over 70 years. Research comparing historical (1949) and recent (2003, 2011, 2022) avifauna data reveals a sharp decline in species richness—from 114 to 44 species—and a shift toward human-associated species, now accounting for up to 29% of individuals. The study highlights that increased anthropotization reduces both biodiversity and the ecological uniqueness of the valley, with notable declines in natural biotope-dependent species. Longitudinal observations, including standardized surveys in 2003 and 2022, quantified these changes, showing a 50% reduction in bird abundance despite expanded human activity across the valley.
