Summary

A study of the western Tien Shan reveals that the region's current tectonic stress field, marked by nearly east-west compressional axes, aligns with recent geological stress patterns. This finding was derived from detailed geostructural and tectonophysical analyses across key epicentral zones, including Talas-Suusamyr, Chatkal-Kurama, Turkestan-Zarafshan, Gissar, and Nurata-Kyzylkum. The research also shows that strong earthquakes in these folded-mountain regions are linked to thrust/strike-slip faulting and the fragmentation of large tectonic blocks, providing critical insights into the region's seismic activity.
